Organised by Karly and Andrew Williams, the day began bright and early at Mudgeeraba Market Shopping Centre, with members arriving from 8:00am for coffee, conversation and the usual pre-run inspection of cars, tyres and weather radar apps. With a hint of wet weather on the trip to the start for some, the rain managed to stay just far enough away to allow tops-down motoring for the whole of the run — at least until some members encountered showers on the drive home.
With 20 cars split across three groups, the convoy headed out through the Gold Coast hinterland before tackling one of the great local MX-5 favourites — the climb over Mount Tamborine. The combination of elevation changes, flowing corners and tighter technical sections reminded everyone why roads like these seem perfectly matched to Mazda’s lightweight roadster.

After descending the mountain down to Canungra and navigating a collection of scenic back roads – with no help from Google Maps – the groups regrouped at Jubilee Park in Beaudesert for morning tea. With prospective new members joining the run, we were able to give them an excellent introduction to both the roads and the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of the Club.

Stage Two shifted the character of the drive slightly, with the route winding through Kerry, Hillview and surrounding rural districts, it’s not called the ‘Scenic Rim for no reason. The roads became more open and flowing in places, punctuated by narrow sections of bitumen, crests, and a seemingly endless collection of single-lane bridges that kept drivers alert and entertained. The run sheets certainly earned their keep on this section of the day.
Eventually the groups rolled into the Flagstone Tavern. While the venue was preparing to hand the space over to line dancing festivities later in the afternoon, members still enjoyed a leisurely lunch, conversation and post-run storytelling before the day wrapped up.

A big thank you to Karly and Andrew for putting together such a thoroughly enjoyable run that combined great roads, beautiful scenery and exactly the sort of driving experience MX-5 owners love most.
