That was certainly the case for our Déjà Vu Club Run, where 24 MX-5s and 44 members set off from Burleigh Heads to revisit some of the Club’s favourite driving roads through the Border Ranges and Northern New South Wales.
Unlike our previous outing on these roads, the weather was on our side from start to finish. While the skies hinted at rain before and after, they never delivered, leaving members free to enjoy some outstanding winter driving conditions.
The route offered everything an MX-5 driver could ask for. Farrants Road delivered its trademark tight, technical corners that reward precision, while the sweeping bends across the Burringbar Range provided plenty of opportunities to settle into a smooth rhythm. Tomewin Mountain Road was, as always, a highlight, and Group 2 was particularly appreciative when the driver of a grey SUV courteously pulled aside, allowing the group to enjoy the descent into the caldera uninterrupted.
Our BYO morning tea stop proved to be another highlight. With the location almost entirely to ourselves, members were able to park all 24 MX-5s together, creating an impressive display stretching as far as the eye could see—a perfect photo opportunity (thanks Ains) and a reminder of just how special these Club gatherings have become.
Of course, no good adventure is complete without a story to tell. A small hiccup on the run sheet meant that Groups 1 and 2, along with part of Group 3, followed an unintended shortcut to the Coolangatta Tweed Golf Club for lunch. Only four cars completed both published stages of the run, proving that sometimes “getting there” can be just as memorable as the planned route.

If the smiles at lunch were anything to go by, this is the type of Déjà Vu that nobody would mind experiencing again.
