Club Run – Winter Wanderings #19

Perfect winter weather greeted the 16 cars and their crews who gathered at Helensvale for this year’s Winter Wanderings #19 Club Run.

A special thanks to Denise Peck and Neville Fair, who have organised this annual Winter Wanderings run an incredible 19 times—a tradition that began long before the formation of MX5 Owners Club SEQ and has become a favourite among local MX-5 enthusiasts. Sadly, both were struck down with the flu and had to sit this year’s event out at home. Missing what was arguably the most-cornered run on this year’s calendar to date was particularly cruel luck, but thanks to their excellent planning, the rest of us were able to enjoy every twist and turn on their behalf.

With the field split into two groups of eight, with both groups being led by Kevin and Suzanne (Barnes and Richard). In fact, Group 1 enjoyed one of those rare motoring days where everything simply fell into place—they completed the entire route without being separated by traffic and, perhaps most impressively of all, without needing to perform a single U-turn!

After a week of showers, the weather couldn’t have been better. Clear blue skies and bright winter sunshine made for ideal driving conditions, although a brisk breeze reminded us that it is Winter.

Departing Helensvale, the route climbed up and down the twisties either side of Mount Tamborine before making our way to Hinze Dam for a relaxed BYO morning tea. The perfect opportunity to stretch the legs, enjoy a cuppa and catch up before heading off again.

The second stage wound through the picturesque Beechmont district before descending into the historic township of Canungra for lunch at the Canungra Hotel. Despite the usual Sunday traffic, our groups enjoyed a remarkably clear run for most of the day. Curiously, the traffic seemed to be heading in the opposite direction, with what felt like a never-ending procession of vehicles—particularly Toyota 86s—making their way down the mountain while we had the road largely unobstructed.

A sincere thank you also goes to our Run Leaders and Tail-End Charlies, whose efforts helped ensure another enjoyable day exploring the Gold Coast hinterland.

With spectacular scenery, great company and enough corners to keep every member smiling, Winter Wanderings #19 was another memorable Club Run—and one we hope that Denise and Neville will be joining us for next year.
